================================================================
The Annual Meeting, Luncheon and Change of Watch will be at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Parish in Oriental on Saturday January 17, with festivities beginning at 11 am.
Each year at our Annual Meeting awards are presented to members who completed cruises 1000 nautical miles, or longer, during the previous year. If you qualify, please let me know so that you will be recognized at the meeting.
Another highlight of the Annual Meeting is the presentation of the "Dubious Cruising Awards" to Captains who distinguished themselves by doing something ill-advised, outrageous, or otherwise out of the ordinary during a SCOO-sponsored cruise. If you witnessed anything of this sort, please submit the names of the Captain, the vessel, and the relevant details about the incident to Vice Commodore Earl Evens
eevens@embarqmail.com
In an attempt (probably futile) to streamline the business segment of the Annual Meeting, we will dispense with the reading of the minutes from the previous year's meeting. Attached are the minutes from the 2008 Annual Meeting. If you wish to make any corrections or additions, please send them to Gerda Lampe before January 7th. (
lampe@lpmonline.net ).
By now, you should have received, via U.S. Mail:
(a) the form for ordering your tickets for the SCOO Annual Meeting and Change of Watch if you plan to attend, please return it by January 8th to Beverly Mott
(b) a form to make suggestions for seminars and cruise destinations for 2009 please complete the form and return it to Gordon Kellogg before or at the Annual Meeting
(c) SCOO dues statement please remit your dues via mail or turn in the form and your check at the Annual Meeting.
Also, all three forms are available via the home page of the SCOO website-- http://www.scoo.org/
If you are sponsoring a prospective member, please make a point of inviting them to attend the Annual Meeting and Change of Watch. If you are a new member of SCOO, the Annual Meeting is a great occasion to meet other members and learn about activities planned for 2009. I hope that you will be able to attend.
Roberta and I are looking forward to seeing you at the Annual Meeting and to another great year of cruising with our many friends in SCOO!
Larry Jones, Commodore

Jan 27 - Feb 12 - Amateur Radio Course (not a SCOO event)
The Pamlico Amateur Radio Society will conduct an Amateur Radio Technician License Course to prepare students for the Federal Communications License Examination. This license allows radio operation on certain high frequency and all VHF and UHF amateur bands. Most repeaters along the Intracoastal Waterway are on the 2 meter VHF band. There is no longer a need to learn the Morse Code for an amateur radio license. The course will meet each Tuesday and Thursday from January 27th to February 12th from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Station 19 Fire and Rescue Building on Straight Road in Oriental. The FCC exam will be given on February 12th. The lead instructor is Jamie King (KJ4JK) from Oriental. There is no charge for the course, however there will be a charge for the text book and the FCC exam. Please call either Jamie King at 249-1549 or Jim Hartmeyer (AI4WL) at 249-1984 for additional information and registration.

BoatUS Membership Reduction
SCOO is a cooperating member of BoatUS and members of SCOO who join or renew their membership in BoatUS are eligible for a discount on the annual membership fee in BoatUS It's not a huge savings, but its easy to do and requires nothing more than showing the Cooperating Group ID Number on the membership form. I could not figure out a way to do it using the paper form provided with my renewal, but you can do it easily online or by calling their 800 number.
The SCOO Cooperating Group Number is GA80948S.

The Sailing Club of Oriental (SCOO) provides a year round schedule of social and on the water activities for over 200 members in Pamlico County. Membership is open to residents of Pamlico County who own cruising style boats (sail AND power).

The events, varying in length from a few hours to several days, offer members a chance to explore the many local harbors and share their experiences with fellow members.

SCOO also provides a winter series of educational seminars that are designed to promote safety and enhancement of boating skills.

SCOO members are "round the world" sailors and beginners fresh out of the sailing school. We have serious cruising sailboats and "go fast" power boats. What we have in common is our enjoyment of the Neuse River and adjacent waterways in the area.
